Eating Healthy This Summer

This summer, I'm determined to eat healthy. I say this every break, but it never really works. Here are my tips for making this summer different than all of the rest.

Fill your house with healthy food. If you're surrounded by healthy food, you have to eat it. If possible, get rid of as much junk food as possible. You won't be tempted to eat it if you don't see it.

Go grocery shopping. You can go pick the food that you love, whether it's strawberries, avocado, or spinach. I find a way to incorporate avocado and spinach into as many meals as possible because I love it so much. It makes it that much easier to eat healthy.

Find easy recipes you love. The key word is easy. When I'm hungry, I want to eat whatever I can make fastest. Whether it's grabbing a handful of goldfish or microwaving something, I don't want to spend 30 minutes making a nice meal. I love making avocado toast, omelettes, fruit, or peanuts when I want something right away.

Don't go out to eat! When you go out to eat, it's so easy to say "just this one time," and get that ice cream that looks oh so good. Even when you do get a salad, they load it up with dressing and sides. If you do end up going out with friends, eat a snack before going out, and order the smallest portion possible. If possible, look at the nutritional facts before, or weigh pros and cons. If you live somewhere where there isn't much to do (like me), suggest other options like going shopping (walking around the mall is fun!), going to the park, kayaking, going to a painting class, or taking a dance class.

Don't overeat. Did you know by the time you're full, you've already overate? Eat just enough that you're feeling good.

Have a friend do this with you. If you have another friend trying to eat healthy this summer, team up with them! My friend AV is my friend I'm teaming up with this summer. Every time one of us eats something healthy, we send a photo to the other. She sent me a picture of her banana pancakes and I sent her a picture of my omelet.

Make your meals Insta-worthy. Doing this isn't just for Facebook bragging rights, but it also helps you perfect your meal and include more colors (which typically is more fruits). I love sending pics to AV because I add more to my meals. This morning, I was just going to have my omelet. But since I knew I was sending a pic to AV, I added a slice of whole wheat toast, some strawberries, and a glass of skim milk. It tasted much better and I had a complete meal perfect for the rest of the day.

Let your friends know that you're eating healthy. They'll encourage you on when you aren't feeling it, and they'll stop asking if you want to grab froyo for lunch.

Make the switch from soda to sparkling water. If you're a soda addict, switch to sparkling water with some lemon. It still has all of the bubbles you love, but none of the sugar.

Always have water on you. It makes all the difference. If you have a reusable bottle in your car, filled with ice-cold water, you'll be drinking water more than ever. Don't forget to remind yourself to drink water.

Some of my favorite things to eat...

  • Omelet: I personally only like egg whites, but that's just my preference. I add some cheese (I can't cut cheese out of my life sadly), ham, tomatoes, onions, spinach and arugula. I love adding avocado on top and freshly ground pepper. It makes for a great breakfast with a half-slice of whole wheat toast and some fruit.
  • Avocado toast: I have a slice of whole wheat toast with a thin layer of olive oil drizzled over. I mash up some avocados, add chopped tomatoes and freshly ground pepper. I spread the mixture on top of toast.
  • Greek yogurt: It took me a while to get used to Greek yogurt, but now there's no going back. I love Greek yogurt, especially with some granola or honey mixed in.
  • Nuts: This year at school, I also had a container of peanuts, academia nuts, almonds or walnuts in my bag, they're filling and the perfect snack because they're very healthy and filled with good oils for you.
  • Fruit: I love strawberries, pineapples, peaches, plums... all of it! I typically ask my parents to buy strawberries and they'll buy whatever's in season and stock in the stores. I'm excited to slice up some peaches soon! I eat strawberries whenever I'm hungry.
  • Frozen grapes: If you've never tried frozen grapes, try it! I love love love it. Such a treat.
  • Celery and peanut butter: I'm a huge fan of peanut butter, so there's that.
Do you have any tips on eating healthy? What are some of your favorite healthy things to eat? Anyone have any other habits? My friend RR is going vegetarian this summer.

(J) Crew Love

I hope my friend H is proud of my Drake reference. I haven't been blogging for a while, so while I'd typically have a huge list of things I've bought... I don't really! I haven't been shopping much because school has been consuming my life. But hey... now summer is here! More shopping? ;)

Sale items are an extra 30% off and final sale items are an extra 60% off with code SHOPSALE!

Here are some of my recent purchases that I've been loving:

via
I just bought a pair of the Toothpick Cone Denim jeans in a lighter wash. These are my first pair of J.Crew jeans (I have one pair from J.Crew factory but I'm not a fan), but I tried these on in the store and fell in love! Most comfortable (and flattering) pair of jeans I own! I'm buying the darker wash today.

via
I tried on this sweater in store and fell in love with it! I was about to buy it, but then I saw another one that I liked better. It's so flowy and loose, I'd totally suggest it!

via
I got this one! I'm loving the new tie-dye trend that's happening. It's so pretty! It's my all time new favorite shirt, ever!

via
I got this shirt on a whim. But I'm so glad I did! It's so cute and H is obsessed with it. So pretty and fun! I brought this shirt and the sweater above with me to DC!

What are your current fav picks from J.Crew?

"ConGRADulations!" All about grad parties

With graduation season comes graduation parties; a super exciting season full of gifts, food, Instagram shots and talking.

I got invited to four graduation parties this year, and luckily, J is invited to three of the same ones! This was the first time I'd ever been to a graduation party and I was kinda nervous (ok, I get nervous over everything). I'm glad I have J with me for three of them (and the last one is with the person I'm closest with, so it all works out!).

I did my research (asked other people) what gifts to get people and what outfits to wear. It ranged from gift cards to just tumbler cups filled with candy and nail polish, and dresses or just a cute top and shorts.

The first party we went to was yesterday, after graduation. We had been told that many people don't stay at grad parties for too long, as they grad party "hop," so we weren't planning on staying for more than 30 minutes.

We got to ADI's house, and it was brimming with ADI's family friends, family and friends. We found ADI in the backyard, and she introduced us to her mom, who was super sweet and inviting. We got drinks, talked to ADI's boyfriend for a bit, and the two of us just talked.

Soon, lots of familiar faces from the prom group showed up, KP came. We all talked, and it was fun mingling and getting to see everyone. J and I had a great time talking to everyone! One of my favorite guys, Mr. C, an English teacher who I've always loved talking to, showed up as well. I have never had him as a teacher, but we always love talking, so it was great to see him! It was a fun night of (badly) losing cornhole, talking with lots of friends, meeting new people, and just relaxing.

Me and Mr. C!
He's so sassy and fun

Today was KP's grad party. She kept telling J and I about all of the Moe's that she had gotten catered (1.5 trays of queso!! Talk about happiness). We got there, signed her yearbook (a genius idea to have at a grad party), got some food, talked, and got very tan under the very present sun. It was great to see lots of people we knew and meet new people and just talk to everyone. J's Spanish teacher (how he met ADI and KP) came, and everyone was super excited to see her! We stayed for a bit, mainly talking and eating (a lot). Lots of my friends made an appearance, so it was great to get to talk to them!

I have 2 more grad parties to go to: Student Body Pres and PP! I can't wait.

Here are great gift ideas for grad parties:

  • Picture frame with the two of you: they can take it to college with them
  • Mix tape: full of songs you all blasted out to throughout high school
  • Tumbler with the school they're going to: filled with candy and a bottle of nail polish
  • Kendra Scott Color Bar jewelry: Customize it with their fav colors or their future school colors! I was super surprised (in the best way possible) to find out that some of the Color Bar pieces are on sale, as you can customize it! I'm a huge fan of my Noelle necklace from KS Color Bar (now on sale for $64.97!)

  • When in doubt, gift card it out with a nice card

For all the "foodie-graphers" (aka me): Stealz

I admit it. I'm guilty. I'm that person who takes a photo of her food before eating it. It's just so pretty! Food is truly an art, and art should be shared with the world. Now, you can have the best of both worlds. If you're like me, you think your food-stagrams are top notch and should be rewarded (with more free food to take photos of, of course!).

If you live in North Carolina, I've got the app for you: Stealz. Stealz is honestly the most amazing app. Lots of local restaurants and business have Stealz, so when you go to one of those businesses, you can check-in, snap a photo and share it to social media, and earn points.

As you earn points, you can redeem the points for rewards. The rewards vary by business; some rewards include a free drinks, desserts, half off entrees, and more!

I've loved using the app and redeeming prizes! Check it out!

Here was my first Stealz photo!
I was at Tasty 8's and saw their ad for Stealz.
I had the app downloaded but hadn't used it yet, so I was excited to try it out!

I was not sponsored by Stealz; all opinions are my own.

Kendra Scott Charity Event

I've come to the decision that instead of giving you long updates about my life in one scattered post, I'll just update you on the events individually! Yay, so first up... a much loved Kendra Scott Charity Event!

I'm currently the VP of the UNICEF club at my school. UNICEF's current fundraiser is raising money for the Nepal Earthquake victims. We wanted to help raise money, and I knew that Kendra Scott did lots of charity events, so we reached out to our local Kendra Scott. They were super sweet and told us that we could have a charity event at their store. On a certain day, for a two hour period, 20% of that Kendra Scott's store's proceeds would go to UNICEF!

Unfortunately, there was a bit of commotion and time constraints with our school, so the event wasn't allowed to be done through the school, so we couldn't hang up posters through the school. However, we had the event done outside of school. It was a really fun event!

I bought a necklace for myself and a charm for a friend's graduation present. Since we didn't really get to advertise as much as we wanted, not a ton of people from our school showed up. However, there were lots of shoppers for a Tuesday night which was awesome! I'm always glad to shop at Kendra Scott (and help a good cause!).

Me, SS and AV
My necklace is Kendra Scott (the design is not available anymore)

Panera for dinner is always a good call

Here are the pieces that I got:
Mara Pendant Necklace
Love this!
This is the necklace I got for myself! I'm not sure if the color is exactly right as the pic I picked from the KS website, because my eyes aren't 100% sure, but I think this is the one! I love this delicate necklace and I wore it for the first time at work training yesterday. I love how it goes with everything and I think I'll be wearing it all the time from now on!

Goldstone Charm
How cute is this?
I was looking for a graduation present for my friend KP (more about her to come in my Prom post!). I really liked this charm and considered buying it for myself, but then I realized it'd really compliment her eyes! It was perfect. I just need to buy a necklace chain for her!

Rayne necklace
Wearing it for the first time!
So many compliments!

There was a raffle for this necklace that I loved, and I was lucky enough to win! I entered 5 times before the deadline and I was beyond delighted that I won! It's my favorite necklace and I was considering buying it, but good thing I didn't!

Kendra Scott is amazing on helping out with charity events, so if you ever want to do an event with them, reach out to them! And their jewelry is the cutest ever! Thanks Kendra!

I'm Back!

Sorry for the long long long absence! It's been a jam packed month between school, extracurriculars, AP exams, SAT and the ACT twice! I hope to be back for good!

Quick 5-Minute Recap about my life: Chaos! After stressing about my calc AP exam (which was today and I feel alright about!), and just trying to get through school, prom planning and all that jazz... I feel a lot better about life just with two of my AP exams done. Only 3 more to go!

Prom planning is very very very fun! Prom is almost here (and I still need to get my dress altered, shoes, and boutonniere for J! I'm very thankful that I didn't make the plans for my group, because as much as I love planning, planning a prom for 700 students is enough for me! :) We are getting catering from Daniel's at a friend's house and we are getting ghetto-looking (and cheap) party bus (with a stripper pole!). I'm getting ready with AV, SS and some other friends, and J and I are getting photos taken by A (who can't wait to meet J!). I can't wait!

Shot from my backyard on Earth Day
I've gotten three J.Crew items this week! I love online ordering; it's so exciting to wait for something to come in the mail, and see the item when the package finally comes!

My phone case came in first!
I've been needing a new phone case for so long.
I love it so much!

I love this men's flannel shirt.
So cozy and comfy!
Probably not the best for spring... but I can never say no to a flannel!

And finally... the necklace for prom!
I love it so much, and it turned out to be even better in person!
The best part about AP exams?! 50 minute lunches! (We typically have a 40 minute lunch... and this 50 minute lunch isn't fully enforced, so you can go a little bit over!) I only have morning exams, which means plenty of 50 minute lunches for me! :)

My favorite place with my favorite boy, J!
It's like the Subway for pizza- too good!

Cinco de Mayo at my fav fast-Mexican place: Chipotle!
Mexican is always much needed... especially after a calc exam!
I love love love fresh flowers! I saw my favorite flowers in Fresh Market and couldn't resist taking a snap:
Peonies are my favorite!
I sadly can't post any prom-prep photos yet, but I'll definitely post them after prom! (All of it: the set-up, buying the prom decorations for hours at AC Moore with J and our advisers, prom preparation, and lots of online orders!)

I also got my summer camp schedule today! I'm so excited to be working again at the best job ever this summer! I'm working 7 weeks (which I think is a lot, but a lot is great!). I'm really hoping that I'll be able to do everything I want this summer: from hanging out with friends, getting ready for college applications, and going on lots of adventures! (The bucket list coming soon!)

That's a quick (not so quick, sorry) recap on my past month or so! (I'm probably forgetting a ton of things, so that's the Sparknotes version!)

Lots of posts coming soon! (Slowly but surely, I promise!) Thanks for sticking with me! :)

Prom Dresses (The Ultimate Guide)

As you may or may not know, I'm planning the prom at my school this year with J! We are so excited. Here are some tips that I've learned...

Before you start looking...
  • Know your budget: this is the most important part! There's nothing worse than falling in love with a dress way out of your budget. Figure this out with your parents before doing anything.
  • Know your size: this is helpful for ordering dresses online and reducing the chance of having to exchange sizes (just such a hassle!).
  • Know what you like and dislike: you might figure this out as you start looking at dresses and trying them on, but if you know beforehand, you can set filters on websites and let the staff know at the store. Things to think about: dress color, sleeves/sleeveless/strapless, dress length, slits, cut-outs, jewels, etc. On the other hand, keep an open mind if you're not 100% sure, you may find the perfect dress that isn't what you were envisioning.
Where to go...
  • Trustworthy sites over sketchy online sites: that dress is super cute AND it's super cheap... but the website is some site you've never heard of and looks a bit sketchy? Sometimes it's too good to be true. I'd rather pay more for a dress you can trust with a good return policy. Always google the website and its reviews (don't trust the reviews listed on the site- they're typically all mysteriously positive!).
  • Discount sites and outlets: if you don't want to spend $98502 on a prom dress, I totally understand! We're in the same boat. I don't see the point of buying a super expensive prom dress that you're only going to wear once. Yes, you can resell, but there's always risk in that. The BCBG outlet is always a popular choice to go, and 6pm.com is the best hidden secret. (and totally safe! Promise! Make sure you check its return policy though because I've never returned anything from there.)
  • Check back often: There are typically occasion sales where they discount some of the prom dress styles, so check back for your favorites at the various websites and stores!
  • Check out other sections: Don't limit yourself to the "prom" section. There are lots of gorgeous dresses in the bridesmaid and evening gown sections!
My Recommendations
Found a couple of contenders you want to buy?
  • Check the return policy: just in case. My family are huge fans of Nordstrom's return policy; it's awesome.
  • If needed, find out how much alterations cost: this might just be me because I'm short, but I will probably need my dress altered, if it's complimentary with your purchase, take advantage of that!
  • Do a double take to make sure it's good: It has happened to me, I bought something, and when we got home, we realized there was a tiny tear or something small, but yes, noticeable.
